Adult Dependent Visa

As the parent, grandparent, sibling or adult child of a British Citizen or a person with settled status in the UK, you can apply for permission to reside in the UK on an Adult Dependent Visa.

Adult Dependent Visa

This visa allows you to join your family in the UK for an unlimited period, if the relative is a British Citizen or has settled status in the UK. You can also use this visa if your relative has refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK.

These circumstances may also apply if you need long-term personal care which your UK relative can provide.

What is the adult dependent relative visa?

The purpose of this route is to allow an individual (the applicant) with ongoing care needs to live with a close relative in the UK, if the applicant can show, because of either age, illness, or disability, that they need long-term personal care that can only be provided in the UK by their sponsor.

If the applicant meets the requirements for entry clearance as an adult dependent relative of either a British citizen or someone otherwise present and settled in the UK, they will be granted indefinite leave to enter.

What if my sponsor does not have settled status in the UK?

For those applicants whose sponsor is not yet settled or a British citizen, and who instead has limited leave to remain, the applicant will be granted limited leave of a duration that will expire at the same time as the sponsor's limited leave. Once their sponsor has applied for indefinite leave, the holder of an Adult Dependant Visa will also be able to apply.

The immigration rules are intended to ensure that those Adult Dependant Relatives whose needs can only be met by a relative in the UK are granted immediate settled status, provided their sponsor is a British citizen or also has settled status. The grant of settled status will then mean full access to the NHS and local authority services.
