Tier 4 - Licence

A Tier 4 licence allows UK education providers to sponsor non-EEA (European Economic Area) students to come and study full or part-time in the UK

Tier 4 - Licence

Despite immigration laws in the UK becoming stricter, Universities and colleges are still attracting foreign nationals to come to the UK and study.

What Is A Tier 4 Sponsor Licence?

A Tier 4 licence allows UK education providers to sponsor non-EEA (European Economic Area) students to come and study full or part-time in the UK.

There are two categories of Tier 4 licences:
  • Tier 4 (General) student - for students aged 16 and over who come to the UK for their post-16 education
  • Tier 4 (Child) student - for students aged 4-17 who come to the UK to be educated by independent schools only.

Education providers

You can apply for a Tier 4 licence if you're an educational provider such as:
  • A higher education institution (universities, community colleges and collegiate level institutions)
  • An independent school
  • A publicly funded college

Read the Home Office's sponsor guidance for further information on whether you are eligible to apply.

You can apply for your licence online and the licence application fee is £536.

Compliance with Tier 4 Licence Regulations

Having a Tier 4 sponsor licence means you'll have to follow certain rules to maintain the validity of your licence. These can include:
  • Keeping up-to-date records of non-EEA students
  • Being assessed by an Educational Oversight body who'll decide if you meet educational quality standards
  • Telling the Home Office if the status of any of your non-EEA students change.
  • Meeting acceptable educational quality standards (like financial stability, suitable premises, and teaching staff) set out by the Home Office
